Put This on Your Radar – May 17, 2017

A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:

Martha says:

Michelle Boulé is her own, compact force of nature. The energy and complexity of her body have served the choreography most notably of Miguel Gutierrez for decades, and in the last few years, Boulé has struck out with deeply personal work of her own. The latest, “The Monomyth,” has been seen in fragments, including at Danspace and Movement Research. The title evokes legend and monsters, Joseph Campbell’s myth-making, and the transformation of the hero on a quest – here, a feminist hero, told in dance and performance. Boulé’s creative work resonates deeply: its own brand of epic. “The Monomyth” will be unveiled this week at The Chocolate Factory Theater. Starts Wednesday, May 17 at 8 pm.

I’m intrigued by “Guts/Motor,” a new work in development by Sam Kim, about to get a very early stage workshop performance at Danspace Draftworks. The words in the title are good adjectives for almost everything I’ve ever seen by this choreographer-dancer, who promises “laser-precision focus and butch antics” in the new work. Also appearing in the same evening is Kirstin Schnittker, showing “New Performer.” This early showing will be a one-time, free event at St. Mark’s Church. Saturday, May 20 at 3 pm.
