Put This on Your Radar – September 25, 2017

A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:

Martha says:

This Sunday, a dance moves into its perfect setting. Ben Kimitch is a gentle choreographer who creates mysterious, magnetic work. He premiered his solo “Ko-bu” at Danspace Project in February 2017; this contemplation of death, loss, and sorrow was well-suited to St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery. This weekend, Kimitch and his collaborator-performer Julie McMillan take the work to an even more welcoming space: McMillan will reprise the work in the waxing and waning light of sunrise and sunset at the Noguchi Museum, moving from the indoor galleries to the garden that houses the stone sculptures. The Buddhist religious imagery that underlies the work will be entirely at home. Performed on Sunday, October 1 at 9:00 am and 6:30 pm.

Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Spanish choreographer Salva Sanchis collaborated in 2005 to create the dance quartet, “A Love Supreme.” They set it to music they both love: the album of the same name, by jazz great John Coltrane. Like Coltrane’s jazz, the work invites broad improvisation, though it is also a carefully composed dance piece. In the current staging, it is performed by four energized young men in the Belgium-based Rosas dance company. The work opens not only the New York Live Arts season this week, but will also be offered as part of the inaugural celebration of Princeton’s new Lewis Center for the Arts, at its Hearst Dance Theater. Opens at NYLA on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:30 pm. Opens at the Hearst on Friday, October 6 at 7 pm. The run at both theaters is sold out; NYLA is making a call-in wait list, the Hearst a standby line for returned tickets each day.
