Put This on Your Radar – September 4, 2017

A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:

Labor Day means no more wearing white, and the start of the dance season. And that means festivals.

Martha says:

DANCE NOW, the dance extravaganza that Joe’s Pub has programmed now for 22 years (really the first “Fall for Dance,”) again kicks off its season offering succinct, complete works (five minutes max) by dozens of both established and new choreographers – think The Bang Group, Jane Comfort & Company, ZviDance, Gus Solomons Jr, along with Raja Feather Kelly/The Feath3r Theory, Amber Sloan, and Kyle Marshall, among many others. Each of four performance evenings will feature the work of ten choreographers on the small, distinctive Joe’s Pub stage. It’s a festival of wildly differentiated dance; the ten pieces that best meet challenges of clarity, completeness, and brevity in the Pub’s unique space will be shown in an encore at the end of the month. And the overall winner earns a development stipend and weeklong residency from DANCE NOW. Join the fun for four nights starting on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 pm (with the encore performance on Thursday, September 28.)

Leigh Says:

At almost the same time, American Dance Guild is running its festival, billed as “celebrating diversity,” but it might as well also be celebrating dance history. Of the 34 acts scheduled over four nights, there are works by important artists including Garth Fagan, Molissa Fenley and Margie Gillis, also dance pioneer Bella Lewitzky as well as new works, Native American dance and choreography for dancers in wheelchairs. Every evening has something you haven’t seen in a while, couldn’t see for a while, or haven’t seen at all. Starts Thursday, September 7 at 8 pm through Sunday, September 10.
