Martha says:
This has been a big season for dance anniversaries, and this week is one of the biggest: the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company celebrates its 50th anniversary in a far-reaching season of three programs at The Joyce Theater. The highlight is a world premiere of “Something About Night,” a work for five dancers set to music by Franz Schubert, but the other choices in the program are much-loved older works. The large-cast “Men’s Stories: A Concerto in Ruin,” from 2000, is set to “ruined” Beethoven, in an electronic score by Scott Marshall that unravels two of the master composer’s piano concertos. It underscores how stunning and moving the music remains, as well as how stunning and moving men’s lives – their conflicts, their connections, their masculinity and symbols — are. The Joyce programs include another wonderful work for men, the 2007 trio “Little Rhapsodies,” rapturously danced, and set to Schumann.
To help celebrate the anniversary, the Lubovitch Company is joined by the Martha Graham Company, and dancers from The Joffrey Ballet. Students from the George Mason University School of Dance will dance the lush 1985 “A Brahms Symphony.” Lar Lubovitch is an unashamed master of beautiful, thoughtful movement. This celebration will show off some of the best of his five decades, over eight programs opening Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm.
