A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:
Leigh says:
The first time I laid eyes on Burr Johnson, he was naked. Johnson was performing in John Jasperse’s “Fort Blossom,” which required him to stay in the buff for the entire show. Since then, he’s danced for Jasperse, Shen Wei, Helen Simoneau among others, as well as in his own work; he’s a compelling performer whatever he is or isn’t wearing. See him for the avid way he moves; when he cuts loose it feels like watching someone grab the spotlight on the dance floor of a nightclub. His attitude toward risk, as exhibited by “Fort Blossom,” is just as casual. Tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow at 7 pm, he joins Christopher Stout and Russell Stuart Lilie in “DRAFT_”, a site-specific work on 57th Street at the Doing/Living Marketplace, which used to be Lee’s Art Shop. The performance is in conjunction with a visual art exhibit curated by Melinda Wang, “Chaos/Control.” Using the promo code “INTERCHANGE” scores you a ticket for ten bucks.
