Put This on Your Radar – August 7, 2017

A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:

Now more than ever, it’s important to hold onto Trisha Brown’s legacy. Luckily for us, the Trisha Brown Dance Company is ensuring that it will continue to be danced as she intended and taught. On August 13, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival brings TBDC to the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA for a site-specific offering of “In Plain Site,” a selection of Brown’s work that the company has taken across cities, architectures, indoor and outdoor venues, using new contexts to energize the work, just as Brown did throughout her career. This time, the audience is invited to explore the beautiful Clark campus as they follow the dancers to different locations: a movable feast of dance. The program, a diverse selection from different eras and styles, will include “Opal Loop” (1980), “L’Amour au théâtre” (2009) and “Groove and Countermove” (2000). What a magical way to spend a Sunday. The two afternoon performances are free, but reservations are required.  In case of bad weather, the performers will move inside. Sunday, August 13 at 1 and 4 PM.

If you’re staying in town, there’s free dance with great scenery as well. The 36th annual Battery Dance Festival kicks off Sunday and lasts a week. The location can’t be beat – Robert Wagner Park offers a breathtaking view of the Statue of Liberty. Fittingly, the festival has always been as welcoming of many nations; this year it’s bringing us dance from Belgium to Botswana, as well as the IAAC Erasing Borders Festival of Indian dance on Tuesday night. Performances begin at 7 pm the 13th through 18th; on the 19th the festival moves indoors to the Schimmel Center at Pace University; curtain is at 6 pm. Pro Tip: bring water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, or whatever sun protection you need.  The scenery is stunning, but there’s no shade.
