Martha says:
“The way upward and the way downward is one and the same.” Many a post-modern choreographer would agree with Heraclitus. The Greek philosopher’s cryptic adage became one of the epitaphs to T.S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets.” This weekend at Bard Summerspace 2018, Pam Tanowitz takes the baton and tackles Eliot’s masterpiece.
After being awarded Baryshnikov Art Center’s 2017 Cage Cunningham fellowship (including financial as well as studio and administrative support) for the creation of new work, Tanowitz aimed her multi-disciplinary focus at Eliot’s meditation on the mysterious experience of time. She interprets the poetic masterwork not only in movement, but in collaboration with two other major artistic voices. The work’s new music is composed by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, and images are by visual artist Brice Marden.
The poetry will be read by yet another masterful artist, actress Kathleen Chalfont. In this reflection on Eliot’s words, each artistic element alone would be worth the visit – in combination, this should be a powerful look at our ways in all directions. Opens Friday July 6 at 8 pm.
