Martha says:
Gina Gibney has done so much for dance with her studios, spaces, and social change work, that it would be easy to overlook that she is also a dancemaker. She continues to create and also present other work, often by new choreographers. Gibney Dance Company will present two new works, “Imprint Ghosts” by Adam Barruch, and “Menagerie,” a collaboration between choreographer Shamel Pitts and visual artist Deville Cohen. The two pieces are grouped thematically as “Home,” an idea that triggers associations from loving to traumatic. In bringing these new works to her stage in Lower Manhattan, Gibney continues to be a risk-taker, an arts supporter, and a force in a field that needs more champions. Opens on Friday, November 16 at 8 pm.
If you’re looking for a quick treat, don’t miss “Antigonick,” the “pop up play under construction” that Big Dance Theater is offering at Abrons Arts Underground Theater. The one-act play by poet Anne Carson centers on the eponymous central character of Sophocles’ “Antigone.” observing her through a feminist lens, considering her choices and the feud that propels the action. The always radical and unique Big Dance Theater takes it from there. Lasting only about a half-hour, a post-show “Dionysian Libation” is included each night. Opens Wednesday, November 14 at 7 pm.
