A weekly, highly personal and subjective list of performances and artists we want you to know about:
Martha says:
Jonah Bokaer is best known for his mysterious choreography and evocative dancing, but dancing is not his only art form. Also a visual artist, filmmaker, app designer, and researcher, he collaborates with top artists in other fields as well. In four New York premieres at The Joyce Theater, Bokaer has partnered with designer Charles Renfro to create a visual, musical, and dance feast. This opening will mark his company’s 15th year – definitely a cause for celebration. Opens Saturday, October 27 at 8:00 pm.
Carrie Ahern also cuts across multiple elements in her performance art. In “Sex Status 2.0,” Ahern and her diverse company of women take on different questions about what femininity means and where women’s power resides, triggered by Simone de Beauvoir’s classic “The Second Sex.” Seventy years later, Ahern’s new exploration is broken into three sections, each held in private New York homes on three subsequent weekends between October 24 and November 10. Each home – and its furnishings, tastes, and idiosyncrasies—will offer different paths through the private and public musings of this company. Each program is different, so choose your geography (Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Manhattan) – or come to them all. Opens in Bushwick on October 24 at 8 pm.
